Carl W. Dieffenbach

Dr. Carl W. Dieffenbach is the Director of theDivision of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,part of the National Institutes of Health. Under his leadership, the Divisionsupports a global research portfolio to advance biological knowledge ofHIV/AIDS, its related co-infections, and co-morbidities. With the ultimate goalof creating an “AIDS-free Generation,” the Division develops and supports theinfrastructure and biomedical research needed to: 1) halt the spread of HIVthrough the development of an effective vaccine and biomedical preventionstrategies that are safe and desirable; 2) develop novel approaches for thetreatment and cure of HIV infection; 3) treat and/or prevent co-infections suchas tuberculosis, and co-morbidities of greatest significance; and 4) fosterpartnerships with scientific and community stakeholders to develop andimplement effective interventions.  Dr. Dieffenbach received hisbachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland in 1976 andhis Ph.D. in biophysics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1984.
